The Holiness of God: First things first

What does it mean to being different? Holy or holiness means to be cut off. We are a sinful people by nature. Every day we sin whether we know it or we dont. However we know that God still loves and has forgiven us the day Jesus died on the cross for our sins. God is Holy.

Why is it important to know of and about the Holinss of God? We have to come face to face with the character of the God of the Bible. The character of God is also known as the attributes of God. We know from the Bible that God is invisible, truthful, Holy and the list goes on.

The uniqueness of God. What does that mean? It is a class of character by itself. We as humans are defined by Him. God (He) is unique in his mighty love, grace, justice, and the list goes on.

Hosea 11:9
"I will not carry out my fierce anger, nor will I turn and devastate Ephraim. For I am God, and not man- the Holy One among you. I will not come in wrath."
In this passage, it shows that God is unique in his mighty love.

Isaiah 40:25
"To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal? says the Holy One." The uniqueness of God. He cannot be compared to anyone in all his attributes/characters.

Exodus 15:11
"Who among the gods is like you, O Lord? Who is like you --- majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders?"

1 Samuel 2:2
"There is no one holy like the Lord; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God."

Another attribute of God is His moral perfection.

Deuternomy 32:4
"He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and all his ways are just."

Micah 6:11-13
"Her rich men are violent; her people are liars and their togues speak deceitfully. Therefore, I have begun to destroy you, to ruin you because of your sins." God cannot tolerate sins for He is Holy. A slight sin is untolerable to Him. Thus in Micah 6, The Lord's Case against Israel.

What is sin and where did it come from? Sin began in genesis when adam and eve ate that apple from that tree. Sin means the rebellion against God. In the ancient days or also known as the Old Testament of the Bible, the Jewish community gets rid of sin by performing various sacrifices with the high priests in connection with the tabernacle. What is the tabernacle? The tabernacle is the symbol of Jewish holiness. Thus stated in Exodus 25- 40.

The tabernacle is a portable place of worship. In Exodus, the tabernacle always moves with the people. The tabernacle represents 2 things. The first is that God is separate from His people because he cannot tolerate sin. The second things is that God is always with his people. The tabernacle is always in the middle of the people when they are moving to their land of Canaan.

Jesus is the mirror of God's Holiness.

Hebrews 7:26
"Such a high priest meets our need -- one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens." The high priest here in state is non other than Jesus. Jesus is without sin.

Romans 5:10
"For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!"

1 Peter 2:24
"He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed."

He showed his holiness in his actions. He is the perfect sacrifice as proven in Romans and 1 Peter.

Sanctification...in greek "sanctus". What are the features of sanctification?

2 Corinthians 7:1 -- Sanctification is a continous process
"Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness our of reverence for God."

1 Thessalonians 5:23 -- Sanctification is holistic
"May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ."

Phillipians 3:12 -- Sanctification is not perfected in this life.
"Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me."

Review:

A way to Holiness is through sanctification. Sanctification also means the elimination of distractive behaviours and the development of positive behaviours....which will be commented on...tomorrow.
